Restoring ecological function through beneficial human actions .

We blend science, technology and traditional ecological knowledge from around the world, to develop holistic management goals and outcomes for our clients.

When carefully considered and applied for each specific site and landscape, these actions renew natural processes that not only benefit the land itself, but also reinvigorate our reciprocal relationship with it.

OUR SERVICES

Holistic Landscape Management

  • Land ownership is not just a right. It is an even greater responsibility.

    • Holistic property management for restoration, resiliency, and health.

    • Ecological design and consultation identifying opportunity and insecurity.

Forestry and Prescribed Fire

  • Forests are a complex of multiple ecosystems that grow and develop over many cyclical generations. No matter the successional state of your forest, we have strategies and practices that will benefit the land and its owner(s).

    • Thinning (specialization in low impact hand thinning)

    • Organize and facilitate broadcast burning and prescribed fires

    • Trail building

    • Processing local material for small diameter construction projects (e.g. sheds, porches, arbors, trellises, gazebos, saunas)

    • Establish or harvest alternative forestry products (such as coppiced wood) to use as cuttings, decoration and building material

    • Production of on-site biochar

Water and Riparian Restoration

  • Our goal is to turn a watershed into a watercatch. We want to hold water on the landscape to help mitigate drought, stabilize stream flows, enlarge natural fire breaks and expand riparian habitat for biodiversity and local-use product. We do this through:

    • Low-tech stream restoration (e.g. holding water on the landscape, creating stream structures and habitat)

    • Expanding riparian zone areas by increasing the biodiversity of plantings that have more human value (food, medicine, technology)

    • Water catchment systems for the home

    • Water holding earthworks on the land

Seed

  • Seeds are the containers that hold the blueprint of life. Restoration efforts would be futile without the seasonal collection, harvest and spreading of seed. We assist in:

    • Collection of native and non-native plants for habitat restoration and nursery formation

Biochar

  • Es specializes in biochar production using flame cap kilns. Using a kiln reduces smoke impacts to the community and creates a wonderful soil amendment biochar. The biochar can be spread in the forest or added to a compost pile to supercharge your soil.

Training, Education, Outreach

  • ES developed and manages the Cascadia Prescribed Burn Association we teach prescribed fire to anyone wanting to learn more. Participate in one of our workshops, invite us to present, or start your own PBA in your community and we will help get you started.

“You have opportunities such as mankind has never had before, and may never have again. Your work is great and noble; it is done for a future longer and vaster than our conceptions can embrace. Why not make its outlines and beginnings worthy of these destinies, the thought of which gilds your hopes and elevates your purposes?" Lord Bryce James, Temper of the West
